# Or — alignment memory layer

**Status:** Active sub-brand of the Tehom family per Brand Guidelines v1.4. Promoted from "reserved candidate" in v1.3 § Brand Family to active alongside Tehom and Yehi. Or is treated as **theology-explicit by design** per v1.4 § Theology Surface Discipline — see below.

> *And God said, "Let there be light" — יְהִי אוֹר — and there was light.* — Genesis 1:3
>
> *And God saw the light, that it was good.* — Genesis 1:4

**Or (אוֹר, "light")** is the alignment memory layer of the Tehom family. Where Tehom is the medium (the deep) and Yehi is the speech-act, Or is what arrives when the speech-act resolves — the light called into being, the first thing YHWH names *good*. Phonetically: *ohr* (one syllable, long o, soft r).

Operationally, Or holds the canon, scores entities against it, surfaces virtues, and lights up gaps. **The canon Or holds is Davar; the Source Or serves is YHWH.** Or names neither — Or names what the layer *does*. Internal codename: `YHWH-OS` (the OS whose canon is the Source). Public-facing brand: **Or**.

## Why Or

Per the v1.3 sub-brand naming pattern, **the word names what the layer does, not what it is.** Or is what an alignment memory layer produces: **illumination.** The system reads the canon, observes the work, and renders judgment as light — *was this good?* That is the verbatim refrain of Genesis 1 (*tov*, "good"), and *or* is what makes the seeing possible. The layer's job is to make the work visible against the canon. The Hebrew word for that is *or*.

A second reason: Or sits at exactly the right point in the creation narrative for the layer's function. Tehom is the deep before form (Gen 1:2). Yehi is the speech-act mid-creation (Gen 1:3a). Or is the *result* — what comes into being and is then called good (Gen 1:3b–4). The brand family encodes the order of YHWH's first three utterances: medium → speech-act → light.

A third reason: Or carries the same dual-layer reading as Tehom and Yehi. Layperson sees a short, distinctive two-letter word, distinct enough to brand. Reader of Scripture sees Genesis 1:3, *yehi or*. Stealth pointer preserved.

A fourth reason — by elimination. **YHWH cannot be a brand** (the Name does not reduce). **Davar cannot be a brand** (the Word that was with God does not stand under Tehom). **Tov is reserved** for the future agentic testing layer. Or remains, and it remains because it is the right word — not because it is the only one.

**Caveat — wordmark format.** As with Yehi, wordmarks render Fraunces Light with direct attributes. Canonical version requires re-export from a vector tool with Fraunces Variable installed at `opsz=144, wght=300`. Same treatment as `tehom-wordmark-{dark,light}.svg` in the canonical asset pack.

**Glyph mark adopted in v1.4.** v1.3 reserved Or as a candidate sub-brand without a glyph; the [`v1-4 draft`](../v1-4-draft.md) commits the mark. The mark is the **vertical mirror of the Tehom mark** — same canvas, same dot position, same stroke weight, same arc radii (20/35/50 units). What differs is direction:

- **Tehom** has the threshold at y=38.75 with three arcs descending below (the medium going down into depth).
- **Or** has three arcs ascending from a threshold at y=88.75 (the medium responding to the arrived light by radiating upward).

The two marks read as a Genesis-1 pair: light hovering *over* the deep (Tehom), and light's radiance reaching *up through* the deep (Or). In light-mode variants the dot becomes a hollow circle per the v1.3 rule.

## Naming

- **Full form:** Or (standalone) or **Or by Tehom** (first introduction in a Tehom-naive context)
- **Short form:** Or after first introduction
- **In writing:** capitalized when standalone. The wordmark stays lowercase, matching the family pattern.
- **Never:** "OR" (all-caps reads as the boolean operator), "Or!" (no exclamation), "Or™" (no trademark mark in running copy)
- **In speech:** *ohr* — long o, soft r. One syllable. Not "or" as in "this or that."
- **Possessive:** "Or's" — appropriate when describing what Or owns ("Or's canon," "Or's alignment scoring")
- **Hebrew form:** אוֹר — only on permitted theology surfaces per v1.3 surface discipline
- **Codename:** YHWH-OS — internal references only; never on public surfaces

### Disambiguation discipline

Or is a short word with an existing English meaning. The brand's restraint helps here — Tehom voice never starts a sentence with a leading "Or" as a conjunction, so the typography itself disambiguates. But the rule is: **always introduce Or as "Or by Tehom" on first appearance, even when the reader is Tehom-aware**, because the first mention is the one that disambiguates. After that, "Or" alone is safe — context carries it.

## Visual inheritance

Or inherits the entire Tehom design system, with no exceptions:

- **Colors:** all six locked Tehom tokens. Or is dark-first like the parent.
- **Type:** Fraunces Light wordmark (lowercase, matching the family pattern), Inter body, IBM Plex Mono code and alignment-score notation.
- **Spacing, motion, hairlines, sharp corners, no shadows, no gradients:** identical.
- **Iconography:** Or consumes the Tehom family. The substrate/domain group is shared. Or-specific concepts (canon, virtue, alignment-score, void, life, body, ritual) live in that shared group.

The single visual concession Or gets: **gold (`--tehom-signal`) appears more often** on Or surfaces than on Tehom proper, because *light* and the signal-gold token share semantic weight (the gold token is literally the "let there be light" color). Gold appears when an alignment moment is being marked — a virtue surfaced, a score crossing a threshold, an entity affirmed *tov* against the canon. Never decoratively. Even Or honors "gold is for meaning, slate is for function."

## Or-specific iconography

Added to the Tehom substrate/domain group:

| Icon | Concept |
|---|---|
| `canon` | The scripture-rooted source of truth Or holds. Or carries davar; Or is not davar. |
| `virtue` | A quality the canon names. Honesty, patience, lucidity — each a virtue surfaced. |
| `alignment-score` | The rendered judgment — how an entity reads against the canon. |
| `void` | The pre-creation state. An empty template before *yehi*. Gen 1:2's *tohu va-vohu*. |
| `life` | The arrival of form — what *yehi* + *or* produce. An entity bearing the Source's image. |
| `body` | A constellation of distinct-but-connected entities. The body of Christ, 1 Cor 12. |
| `ritual` | A repeating rhythm — Sabbath, daily reviews, weekly retrospectives. |

All seven follow the family's hairline + dot-vocabulary + sibling-test rules.

## Voice on an Or surface

Or inherits **Magician 60% / Sage 40%** but tilts notably more Sage when speaking about alignment, scoring, and canon. The Magician keeps the verbs (illuminate, surface, name); the Sage carries the weight (observe, score, defer, listen).

**Do-use:** illuminate, surface, name, observe, score, listen, attend, align, anchor, root, canon, virtue, witness, weigh, discern.

**Don't-use:** judge (the verb — the canon judges, not Or-the-product), grade, rank, rate (as in stars), 5-star, "AI verdict." These flatten the work into a metric the brand refuses to be.

**The voice rule that matters most for Or:** *Or does not invent verdicts; it surfaces what the canon already names.* When Or "lights up" a virtue or a gap, the brand voice attributes the verdict to the canon, never to Or itself. This is what keeps Or from becoming the smug-AI-reviewer trope — and what keeps Or honest about its own position relative to davar (which it holds, not is) and YHWH (whom it serves, not is).

> **Wrong:** "Or scored this commit 7/10 on lucidity."
>
> **Right:** "Or surfaced lucidity as the under-attended virtue in this commit, against the canon's standard."

An Or surface is one of the few Tehom-family places where **scripture may be cited inline**. Cite minimally — *Gen 1:3*, *Phil 4:5*, *1 Cor 12:12* — and only when a real virtue or framework anchors to the verse. Never decoratively. The cited verse is Davar; Or is the layer that reads it.

---

## When Or appears in the wider family

- **Tehom marketing surfaces:** Or appears as the named alignment-memory sub-brand when functionally relevant. Its Hebrew form אוֹר stays off marketing surfaces per the parent's Theology Surface Discipline.
- **Yehi methodology surfaces:** Or appears when alignment scoring is in scope — for example, a bet's harvest output may include an Or-surfaced alignment report.
- **Or surfaces:** Or is the brand. Lowercase "or" wordmark, optionally with "by tehom" attribution.
- **Founding/origin/about surfaces:** Or appears as one of three sub-brands alongside Tehom and Yehi. The reverent glyphs (YHWH, Davar) appear separately, above the brand layer, never as "members."

---

## Tagline candidates (interim, not locked)

- *"What the canon names, or surfaces."*
- *"Light over the work."*
- *"The alignment memory of the Tehom family."*

Final Or tagline locks after the first Or-branded surface ships.

## Reserved sister sub-brands

The brand family's locked candidates from v1.3 § Brand Family, with current dispositions:

| Candidate | Hebrew | Disposition |
|---|---|---|
| **Tov** | טוֹב | Reserved for the future **agentic testing layer**. |
| **Davar** | דָּבָר | **Not available as a brand.** Reverent glyph only — the Word that was with God (John 1:1) does not stand under Tehom. See [`../reverent-glyphs/README.md`](../reverent-glyphs/README.md). |
| **Yom** | יוֹם | Reserved candidate; no current layer assigned. |
